Baltimore-bred, Los Angeles-based emcee E Major presents the self-directed music video to Zodiac Freestyle, where he drops lyrics over Flying Lotus‘ “Zodiac“ instrumental. To that end, he finally achieved his dream of moving to Los Angeles, a gamble for an artist with the kind of support he commands in B-More. His 2011 album Better Than Yours had already made Baltimore City Paper’s top ten albums of 2010 – two years after dubbing his Majority Rules album “a classic” – by the time his 2010 hit Paper Runnin started doing the rounds on 92Q, later remixed by local legend DJ Booman. Wielding common-sense lyricism and a relaxed, persistent flow which presides on equal footing over boom-bap and trap alike, E’s shared stages with Lupe Fiasco, Wale, and Little Brother and has gotten the nod from Okayplayer, MTV, VH1 and DJ Booth. E’s new album Baltimore Bruin is set for an August release.
Dominican-American rapper/producer XODUS presents his new single Go Away, produced by Long Island beatsmith Paulie Monster.
“It was 2005; I was young, trying to form my priorities,” the Washington Heights NYC native says about Go Away‘s genesis. “I’ve always been in a rush and I felt like if I kept spending time out in the street, there was no way I was going to find myself in time to do something great. So, I was literally locked away in a basement, in a long-term, long-distance relationship, and struggling with my own brain chemistry—trying to learn the key to my own happiness so I could begin the pursuit. I brought on my own introspective depression and Go Away was probably all I would have had the energy to mutter if I could have personified pain and exchanged words.”
XODUS is pioneer of the Color Me Different movement, which he explains as “a consciousness, a philosophy. It’s about making your own decisions based upon your unique perspective; developing yourself through thought and self-analysis, rather than just embracing a societal default in order to ensure acceptance. ‘Reject the ordinary, embrace the ordinance.‘” A full-length project is currently in the works.
Mr. West is at it again with groundbreaking music and actions to go along with it. Late last night, he released his new song New Slaves which will be on his upcoming album rumored to be entitled I Am A God. How he debuted the song was the striking part. Ye used video projections across 66 buildings worldwide displaying a black and white image of his face as he performed the song. That, my friends, is one of the most egotistical yet truly artistic things I’ve ever heard [a phrase that can be used to describe Kanye in a nutshell]. The subject matter is the song is introspective and somewhat cynical; a trait of Kanye’s music that the masses have missed. Check out the song below and let me know what you think!
New visuals to Bible On The Dash by Gunplay, from his mixtape 601 & Snort. He def caught my attention with the track, which I heard after the whole fiasco at last year’s BET Hip Hop Awards where he got jumped and fought off multiple foes by himself. Although, he seems to always be in some ish, he does have his head in the right place at least a little bit, as shown by the title of the song. Check out the cinematic video below, directed by Gunplay himself and Ryan Snyder.
This track is blue-eyed soul perfection to me. White Jesus himself Rittz and Mike Posner come together on a track. The vid was shot on the We$t coast, which goes together amazingly with the laid-back vibe of the song. Check it out below.
Well, well, well it seems as if the Breezy vs Drizzy saga continues. In a random but somehow not super surprising turn of events singer Chris Brown has announced that a song on his upcoming album X will feature none other than the late, great and gorgeous Aaliyah. The song is entitled They Don’t Know and will feature never-before heard vocals from the late singer. Chris had this to say about the song, which he just shot a vid for in the hood in Compton [guess being besties with the Game buys protection]:“”I’ll reveal it now! I just actually shot a video and the song is dedicated to all my fans. Its called, “They Don’t Know” and the song features Aaliyah! Never heard before vocals, all new stuff that has never been heard before, its something special for all my fans. I shot it in the hood, I wanted to bring both worlds together in the video and try to uplift the positive side of the community. I mean I come from Virginia, but everyone come from a broken home or broke, I remember when I was!”
To me, this is just a low blow to the competition. While it was still a shock for Drake to use Aaliyah’s vocals at least he paid homage to her multiple times over his entire career, even saying “she deserve the credit for how I’m about to get it.” I personally can’t remember CB ever mentioning Aaliyah before now, at all; not even an RIP or Happy Birthday tweet: NOTHING. So if it is in fact just ammunition to “kill” the competition, I suggest Breezy uses his album sales to buy some class. It would be pretty much the pettiest thing I’ve ever heard to use her likeness just to fuel a war. But that’s just my opinion. Drake can’t hog all the Aaliyah tributes to himself; maybe Chris was divinely inspired and just trying to show love. What do YOU think? Coincidence or cattiness? Vote below! While the whole song hasn’t hit the net yet, I was able to get my hands on a snippet. Check it out and let me know what you think.
I usually don’t like to delve into celebrities’ personal lives but it gives me great pleasure to be one of the first to announce that my favorite female singer Monica is pregnant with her third child! This will be her first child with her husband of three years NBA star Shannon Brown. She has two boys from a previous long-term relationship with rapper Rocko. The couple has mentioned that they’ve been trying for over a year now so I’m very happy for them, despite rumors that they may have split a couple months back. The star revealed the night before Mother’s Day that she is five months pregnant. The sex of the baby has not been announced yet.
